Northern Ireland Beekeeping Rules: DataBees & Imports

Northern Ireland beekeeping rules distinguish voluntary local DataBees registration from mandatory registration for honey-bee imports or exports. Movement rules are specific to Northern Ireland, and garden permission remains a separate property question.
Register the apiary voluntarily, obtain the site’s agreement and check DAERA’s trade guidance before ordering bees from elsewhere. A GB supplier’s routine delivery option is not proof that a nuc can enter Northern Ireland.
Compare the registration and movement tasks
| Situation | DAERA position | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary local hobby apiary | Free, voluntary DataBees registration encouraged | Accurate keeper and apiary details |
| Intending to import or export honey bees | DataBees registration required | Registration before the trade process |
| Incoming eligible consignment | Applicable certification and notification | Documents matching origin and shipment |
| Bee-health concern | DAERA inspection and reporting route | Colony details and prompt contact |
| Backyard or shared site | Local and property checks | Written site conditions |
DAERA’s voluntary registration page explains the ordinary surveillance system. Its imports and exports guidance states the separate trade requirement.
Great Britain and EU shipments follow different routes
Current DAERA guidance permits only queen-bee consignments from GB and other third countries into NI, subject to its designated entry, health-certificate and notification conditions. Do not assume the same route admits a nuc, package or full colony.
EU arrivals have their own certification and advance-notification process, including TRACES NT. Origin restrictions can also apply. Confirm the current conditions for the actual source before paying a deposit.
Ask the supplier to identify the commodity, origin, competent authority and documentation it will provide. Check the destination requirements with DAERA and arrange any account permissions before dispatch.
For exporting, confirm the destination’s requirements as well. An outbound movement does not become compliant merely because the keeper has a DataBees account.
Keep disease-surveillance details accurate
Record all apiary locations and update them when colonies move. A garden belonging to a friend is still a separate place that should be accurately described.
Use DAERA’s bee-health guidance and current contacts for suspect disease or pest concerns. Keep the colony identifier, observation date and supplier records ready when contacting the service.
Our foulbrood comparison guide helps explain suspicious brood signs. Stop exchanging suspect frames or equipment while seeking official instructions.
Ask for garden or allotment permission
Identify the owner or operator with authority over the site. For shared property, explain the hive location, inspection access, water source, backup keeper and removal process.
Position entrance traffic away from doors and regularly occupied paths. A flyway barrier can be a management tool, but it does not grant property permission or an exemption from local requirements.
Keep the site’s authorization, registration information and trade documents together. Recheck when acquiring bees from a new origin or changing the location.
The UK overview explains the wider national distinctions. Use the separate Ireland guide for a Republic of Ireland site and the international research hub for other jurisdictions.

Frequently asked questions
Is DataBees registration compulsory for every NI hobbyist?
DAERA describes ordinary registration as voluntary and free. Its trade guidance separately requires beekeepers intending to import or export honey bees to register through DataBees.
Can I import a nuc from Great Britain to Northern Ireland?
Current DAERA guidance limits GB and other third-country consignments into NI to queen bees under specified entry and certification conditions. Do not arrange a nuc or package shipment on the assumption that it is permitted.
Does BeeBase replace DataBees for Northern Ireland?
Use DataBees for Northern Irish apiaries. DAERA’s registration page asks people to sign up only when their apiaries are in Northern Ireland; BeeBase does not replace that process.
Does DataBees registration authorize a garden hive?
No. Confirm the site’s council requirements, landowner agreement and any shared-property restrictions. Registration supports bee-health surveillance and does not grant use of land.
