About UrbanBee

UrbanBee (published at urbanhivelife.works) is an educational resource for people who keep — or want to keep — honey bees in cities: on rooftops, balconies, and in small backyards. We focus on the questions that are unique to urban settings: local laws and registration, neighbor relations, tight-space hive placement, swarm prevention, and keeping colonies healthy where forage and space are limited.

What we publish

• Guides — practical how-to and troubleshooting articles, from getting started to diagnosing problems like unusual hive smells.
• City law summaries — plain-English overviews of beekeeping ordinances for major U.S. cities, each with links to the official sources.
• Equipment guides — comparisons of hives, smokers and protective gear with urban constraints (weight, footprint, fire safety) in mind.

How our content is made

Articles are researched from beekeeping extension programs, state apiary agencies, municipal codes, manufacturer documentation, and the practical experience of urban beekeepers. Sources are listed at the end of articles in the “Sources & References” section. Some article bylines use contributor pen names; every article is edited and fact-checked by the UrbanBee editorial team before publication. Some illustrative images are AI-generated or stock imagery and are labeled by their captions where relevant.

How we verify city laws

Regulation pages summarize municipal codes and state apiary law from official government sources, which are linked on every page along with a “last checked” date.
