Maryland requires a new, unregistered keeper to register within 30 days of acquiring a honey bee colony and to file annually thereafter. Agriculture section 5-503 sets the recurring deadline on or before January 1 and requires colony numbers and locations.

Use the current form linked by MDA’s Apiary Inspection program, then save the submitted information. Confirm the local hive site’s permission before installation, especially for rented land, suburban lots or a garden near a jurisdictional boundary.

Maryland Filing and Identification Checklist

Section 5-507 requires conspicuous apiary identification when the yard is on someone else’s property, using MDA’s assigned number or other identification it approves. Put that identification into the site plan before bees arrive.

Manage More Than One Yard Accurately

Treat a host’s backyard, orchard or community garden as a real apiary location in the records. Give the agency information that identifies where bees are physically kept, not just the beekeeper’s mailing address. If changing yards or expanding, ask how the registration should be updated.

Keep a written agreement with each host that covers access, inspections, maintenance and the end of the arrangement. Choose a reliable contact for concerns when the keeper is away. The agreement should help someone identify whose colonies are present and reach that person promptly.

Use MDA for Health and Movement Questions

The apiary program provides inspection assistance and lists the Chief Apiary Inspector’s current contact. Ask for advice before an interstate purchase or moving used comb, giving the origin state, shipment type, inspection history and destination.

Routine registration is not the same as a shipment’s health paperwork. Ask which certificate and approvals the actual load needs rather than assuming that a registration certificate travels with every kind of purchase.

For unusual brood, colony decline or a suspected pesticide incident, record dates and observations and request guidance. Keep suspect equipment identifiable. Our American foulbrood guide can help describe a brood concern, but neither a smell nor a photograph alone establishes a diagnosis.

Verify Local Jurisdiction and the Site Plan

Use the address-level beekeeping checklist to identify the governing planning office. Ask about permitted land use, location standards, barriers, water and nuisance rules for the parcel and proposed colony count.

A property inside Washington, DC needs the District’s beekeeping guide rather than Maryland’s registration process. Verify boundaries when the mailing address or ZIP result is ambiguous.

For honey sales, separately review home honey-business questions. Describe the product and sales channel to the food regulator before designing labels or assuming an apiary registration is a food license.

Legal and safety alert: Keep state records, off-property identification and owner permission current. Obtain agency advice before transporting suspect bees or comb.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a new Maryland beekeeper do first?

Confirm property permission, submit the MDA colony registration using its current form and keep the submitted yard locations with your records.

Can I use a Maryland state guide for a Washington, DC yard?

No. A yard within the District has its own rules. Confirm the actual jurisdiction rather than relying on a nearby Maryland mailing address or ZIP match.
