Delaware requires registration of all honey bee colonies and apiary locations, including a one-hive hobby operation. The DDA honeybee program provides online registration and identifies January 30 as the annual deadline.
File before that deadline, or notify the State Apiarist promptly when acquiring bees later in the year. Before accepting an interstate delivery, give DDA a complete contents list and confirm its entry documents. Then verify the destination property’s local rules.
Annual Registration and New Colonies
Section 7504 requires annual filing by January 30. Bees acquired after that date must be reported in writing within 10 days, with colony numbers and locations. People renting, moving or holding someone else’s bees on their land also have a 10-day notification obligation.
Keep the yard list consistent with the operation’s actual locations. A colony placed temporarily for pollination still needs a clear keeper and site record. For shared land, agree who files the information and retain a copy rather than assuming another person completed it.
Compare Delaware Entry Requirements
| Shipment | Rule to discuss with DDA |
|---|---|
| Colonies or used beekeeping equipment | Entry permit and authorized origin inspection |
| Queens, combless packages or nucleus colonies | Specific origin-certificate provisions in section 7513 |
| Mixed load with comb and used equipment | Describe every component before applying |
| Suspect or quarantined material | Obtain official movement advice first |
Under section 7510, incoming colonies and used equipment need a permit supported by an origin-state certificate based on inspection within the preceding 60 days. Section 7513 separately covers queens, combless packages and nucs and prohibits those shipments from places without an apiary inspection service. Ask DDA to apply the relevant section to a mixed shipment.
The licenses and permits page identifies the State Apiarist as the contact for honeybee colony entry permits. Prepare the paperwork before the seller’s shipping date; do not try to fix a missing permit after unloading.
Use Inspectable Hives and Report Health Concerns
Section 7505 requires movable frames that allow visual examination of comb surfaces. Section 7506 requires immediate notice of covered disease or pest concerns, including suspected cases. The legal disease-control process needs agency guidance rather than a keeper’s guess about whether movement is safe.
Give an inspector the colony identifier, observation date, photographs and purchase history. Keep suspect comb away from other colonies while waiting for advice. The American foulbrood guide explains useful observations and the limits of symptom-based identification.
Check the Yard and Honey Sales Separately
Use our address-level legal checklist to determine the municipality or county governing the parcel. Ask about permitted use, hive placement, water and nuisance controls using the actual address and proposed colony count.
Get permission in writing for leased land or a community garden and keep access available for management and inspections. For a jar business, review home honey-sales questions and verify the food requirements for the product and sales channel; apiary registration does not classify that business.
Legal and safety alert: Register and arrange entry documents before relying on a seller’s delivery plan. Do not expose other colonies to suspect comb or move material contrary to agency instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Delaware registration include a single hobby hive?
Yes. DDA’s honeybee program says all keepers must register, whether they have one hive or many. Local property permission remains a separate check.
What information should I give Delaware before an import?
Identify the origin, shipment type, contents, colony count, destination yards and date. Ask the State Apiarist which certificate and entry documents apply before shipment.
