Vancouver permits honey beekeeping on qualifying sites, but hive numbers and placement differ between backyards, community gardens and rooftops. Provincial registration is also mandatory.
Start with the city’s current beekeeping page, identify your property category and review the linked bulletin before choosing a hive position. Shared-property approval and building access belong in that first review.
Compare Vancouver hive allowances
The November 2022 Urban Honey Beekeeping bulletin, linked by the city, gives these site requirements.
| Site | Bulletin allowance | Main placement issue |
|---|---|---|
| Residential parcel below 10,000 sq ft | 2 hives | Rear yard |
| Residential parcel above 10,000 sq ft | 4 hives | Rear yard |
| Industrial or commercial parcel | Same area-based 2 or 4 allowance | Rear of building |
| Community garden | 2 hives per garden | Paths, neighboring properties and secure enclosure |
| Rooftop | Generally 4 per location | Safe access and building capacity |
The bulletin uses “less than” and “over” for the parcel threshold. Ask planning how an exactly 10,000 sq ft parcel is handled. Larger institutional or educational rooftop arrangements require demonstrated management capacity; do not assume an automatic exception.
Plan the rear-yard flight route
The normal residential arrangement describes a 6 ft (1.8 m) solid fence parallel to the property line and 10 ft (3 m) separation from neighboring boundaries, with entrances directed away. Where that fence is absent, the bulletin describes an elevated position at least 8 ft (2.4 m) off the ground.
Its wording includes a qualification about healthy hive functioning. Take a drawing to the city rather than deciding that shade or wind automatically waives a requirement.
Measure the legal parcel, not the area remaining after a shed or parking pad. Mark the gate, inspection space and the route neighbors use. A location that fits a drawing still needs workable access when a colony is opened.
Community gardens and shared buildings
Garden entrances should face away from pedestrian paths. The bulletin addresses 3 m separation from neighboring properties or children’s play areas, a secure permeable enclosure and a contact sign. City or park land needs the responsible public authority’s permission.
For a strata courtyard or roof, agree on who inspects the colonies, controls access and handles a complaint or removal. An agreement should also explain how permission is reviewed if building occupancy or hive management changes.
Our rooftop setup guide helps assess access, loading and working space. A roof’s unused appearance does not demonstrate structural capacity.
Register and manage the apiary
Complete B.C. beekeeper and apiary registration using the province’s current apiculture instructions. The British Columbia guide explains the provincial framework and health responsibilities.
Provide water before the bees arrive, retain inspection notes and arrange backup management during absences. If a colony becomes defensive or repeatedly swarms, seek experienced help and reassess the site.
Vancouver also cautions that adding honey bees is not a substitute for supporting native pollinators. A diverse planted garden can support pollinators without committing to managed livestock. Use the Canada overview and international research hub for the wider legal context.

Frequently asked questions
How many backyard hives does Vancouver allow?
The city’s bulletin specifies two hives on parcels below 10,000 square feet and four on parcels above that size. Ask the city about the exact 10,000-square-foot boundary and any unusual site.
Can I put a beehive in Vancouver’s front yard?
The residential requirements restrict hives to rear yards. Industrial or commercial ground-level locations are also restricted to the rear of buildings rather than street-facing positions.
How many hives can a Vancouver community garden keep?
The bulletin sets a maximum of two per community garden, with pathway, neighboring-property, enclosure and contact-sign requirements. Gardens on city or park land also need the relevant public-land permission.
Does a Vancouver rooftop avoid B.C. registration?
No. Provincial beekeeper and apiary registration still applies. The city generally specifies four hives per rooftop location and requires attention to access, structure and building safety.
